A gorgeous wardrobe staple and a great introduction to dressmaking!

Courses are run over 3 consecutive weekly sessions or 1 full day.
This is a perfect session to introduce you to dressmaking. Taking you from zero to chic in just 2 weeks (or just 1 day!). You'll learn the ins and outs of a commercial pattern with this stylish, 60's inspired shift dress. No previous dressmaking skills are required. We will go through everything from start to finish and the skills you'll learn will enable you to tackle further commercial patterns.

What you'll learn:

  • learning to read a commercial pattern
  • working from your own measurements
  • laying out a pattern efficiently
  • grading a pattern to your measurments
  • pinning and cutting fabric
  • sewing seams
  • sewing 2 different darts
  • basic overlocking
  • inserting an invisible zip
  • hemming
  • hand stitching techniques

  • If time, we also go through some basic nip and tuck alterations after it has been made, to tweak it to your bodyshape. Then take the pattern home and make another!

You will need to bring along your own choice of fabric. Measurements will be emailed to you upon booking. All other materials and equipment are provided, although if you would like to bring your own sewing machine, you are welcome to.

    Please note:
You must be able to thread a sewing machine confidently - completion of one of our Beginners Sewing Classes or equivalent.
This session works in perfect partnership with our Dressmaking Essentials - Reading to Realisation understanding patterns class.
Please bring something with you for lunch if you are with us all day.
